Le Grand Perdu plot

A metaphorical film in which a captain returns to his native region. He learns that during a ceremony in the town hall, the medal for the best citizen of the city was pinned on the chest of a mediocre musician of the municipal harmony. He is delirious with rage and decides to pay tribute to a fringe person, a sort of "village idiot" whose strange and sympathetic acts, he believes, deserve the tribute of the town.
