Doctor Laurent leaves Paris for health reasons and moves to a village in the Alps where he takes over the practice of a doctor who is retiring. At first he is treated with suspicion by the villagers, but when it turns out that he can ensure that the women can give birth painlessly, he begins to gain the trust of the people.
