Lärjungen plot
Thirteen-year-old Karl arrives in the summer of 1939 on a small island in the Gulf of Finland. The strict lighthouse keeper teaches his son Gustav and Karl both the regular school subjects and nautical subjects. Karl would like to become a lighthouse keeper, while Gustav doesn't want to get off the island fast enough if he could. The boys quickly become friends, but when Gustav's father begins to appreciate Karl more, Gustav's attitude changes.
