Giovanni De Medici was one of the main casualties of modern heavy artillery in the early 16th century.

Those who expect to see many battles in this film will be disappointed.

Those who love Italian cinema and beautiful pictures (settings, clothing, light + camera use) can indulge themselves.

Unexpectedly beautiful and actually I prefer this Olmi to Il Posto and L'Albero degli Zoccoli. What it has in common with the latter in particular is that it is a period film, which focuses on Giovanni de Medici (deze), but not on the manner of a traditional psychological drama. The director wants to show you the role of Giovanni in his time and does not aim for you to get to know him as a person. Olmi uses a very nice cinematography, full of beautiful misty landscape images. It is also essential that this is not digitally filmed. The images and the period approach create a serene and sometimes even transcendent atmosphere. I thought it was really beautiful and without the extreme slow filming that is sometimes used for this. The only but also quite big drawback is the overcrowded introduction of characters in the beginning and a somewhat chaotic narrative, something that Il Mestiere delle Armi sticks to for the entire playing time. But I think all the secondary characters are essential to the whole. A longer playing time might have solved this problem. Nevertheless, a must on Netflix for arthouse enthusiasts.
