This gentle tale of temptation, secrets and helplessness caused by the search for love begins in the autumn of 1933 when the superficial tranquility of a small, idyllic Slovakian town is disturbed by the arrival of a taciturn girl named Valentina. She is the forgotten illegitimate daughter of the common notary Karel. Karel, however, refuses to look at the girl. When Karel asks his friend Martin, the principal of the local boys' school, to look after his unwanted daughter, Martin gives her a place to stay. Martin, Karel and another friend, Gabriel, have no inkling that this shy girl, on the brink of adulthood, will soon change their lives.
