A film of epic proportions as I like to see them. In every shot you notice what a gigantic mass production this was; in terms of images it is fun. Both the locations and the battles are very skillfully portrayed, you can leave that to a director like Ridley Scott. The war in the last half hour is a strong example of historic action. And what a cast is gathered here. It is filled with well-known headlines down to the smallest supporting role. Unfortunately, only a select few get the attention as a result, but bon. Funny how Orlando Bloom is played home by literally every actor or actress. Fortunately, he is still believable as an action figure, but in terms of acting he doesn't let you empathize with Balian anywhere. I especially wanted to see more of the king and the characters of Eva Green and Jeremy Irons.

And then I come to the biggest flaw of Kingdom of Heaven: despite the lengthy running time of 144 minutes, it feels a bit rushed or rushed. It jumps from one event to the next, characters come and go into the background again, and so the film gets no room to breathe or live at all.

Now, I've heard that the director's cut, which is an hour longer, is much better and adds really good stuff? Is there anyone here who can confirm this? If so, I would definitely like to see it someday, because in my opinion the film would really benefit from that extra depth. For now a nice 3.5* is in order; more than good, but had the potential to be fantastic.

Action, intrigue, politics, history, romance, beautiful set design and camera work, lyrical music, intelligent dialogue, bravura acting from countless familiar faces, and above all a sympathetic message that is more relevant than ever but that will not be pushed down your throat . I was already impressed in the cinema, but the director's cut (which not only adds 35% extra running time but also 50% extra depth) makes this a film that sucks me into a completely different time period and leaves me completely satisfied afterwards .

Also nice at the structure level to pay attention to the "echoes", the texts or events that later recur in a different context or with a tilted perspective, such as "Jerusalem is easy to find", the text of the knighthood, the servant used by Balian Almaric judges Ibelin as "a poor and dusty place", and Balians "Which is more holy? The wall? The mosque? The sepulchre? Who has claim? No-one has claim. All have claim!" which later has a counterpart in Saladin's "What is Jerusalem worth? Nothing. Everything." All elements that give the film an extra layer, a kind of cycle of recurring themes that give this world an extra "density".
