Kinder der Berge plot

Josef Rainer (Maximilian Schell) is a road worker in a mountain village in Liechtenstein. His wife Marianne (Barbara Rütting) works as a waitress in a restaurant to supplement her husband's low salary. The family dreams of one day owning a cow in order to be less dependent on others. However, due to the lack of money, Josef can only buy a thin, sick cow. The children Hansli and Ludmila take care of the cow and become attached to the animal. When Joseph falls from a mountain and cannot work for a while, it is decided to take the cow, which also does not give milk, to the slaughter. The children come up with a plan to prevent this.
