J. Edgar plot

"The most powerful man in the world."

The film tells the story of former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. The focus is on the scandals in his career and his controversial private life. Helen Gandy, the woman who served as his secretary for 54 years, had considerable influence over the director and, it seems, knew his secrets. And he certainly had secrets. For example, Hoover had a secret relationship with his male assistant Clyde Tolson for years.

Wow what a boring bloodless exercise this was. Well, the cinematic quality is excellent, as you would expect from the Clint. I did have to adjust my color and light settings considerably upwards, the image was so dark. It was like 3D darkness... without 3D then.

Leo is convincing, but otherwise the film is hardly worth watching. I have learned almost nothing about the person of Hoover. It's all very superficial.

Maybe it's time for the Clint to retire.

After Invictus and Hereafter 3 mediocre movies in a row, and this is the least.

First and foremost, another top performance by Leonardo DiCaprio, who portrays the mythical Hoover in a starring role. The film regularly works with flashbacks in which the young and older Hoover alternate. DiCaprio manages to appear credible to both of them.

I knew the name Hoover and his job as FBI chief, but that's where it ended. J. Edgar is best to start with a bit more background and that played tricks on me to stay really focused. The film just got muddy. Luckily I was able to get by with Johnny Depp's Public enemies in the Dillinger/Purvis affair. And I had already heard of Charles Lindbergh and the kidnapping of his son, so it didn't seem completely otherworldly. But it didn't really bother me. Sure, yes. You wouldn't expect anything else with Eastwood behind the scenes either. Overall, a bit too mediocre.

J. Edgar a film with LDC in an outstanding role. The flashbacks work well and all credit to Clint Eastwood for this montage. However, the story didn't captivate me and I find the film less successful in that. The dark images and the long story certainly do not help.
