It's 1939. Mark Saber, a textbook writer in the English town of Penny Green, hastily married Mabel because his real love Nona is married to someone else. Just as World War II is about to break out, Nona returns home from Poland with her fresh husband Tony Tyber. Mabel is sure that Mark will remain faithful to her. But Mark meets a third woman: the young and pregnant Effie Bright. Both are gossiped in Penny Green, which has negative consequences for Mark's job and marriage. Then Effie dies and the local authorities suspect it is murder. Mark is prime suspect.
