"The Most Astounding Story a Man Can Know...And Live to Tell"
Doctor Victor Martel and First Mate Joel Grant share a cabin on a freighter. When their ship calls at the island of St. Jean, the two say goodbye to each other. Victor looks forward to a trip to Devil's Island to work as a prison doctor, while Joel joins the local carnival-goers. When Joel sees a woman sitting alone on a park bench, he sits down next to her. This woman, Claire Martel, begins to cry and tells him that she is unhappy because of an arranged marriage with a man she despises. After a night of talking, Claire and Joel fall in love and Joel decides to leave his ship, while Claire decides to leave her husband.
