An artistic drama that also bears a strong resemblance to a documentary/biography. Visually, it looked quite nice (including the Moloch scene), and James Franco convincingly plays the role of Allen Ginsberg (to be honest, I’ve never heard of him, but that’s not surprising since I don’t care for poets). The rest of the cast did a decent job too, but I didn’t really care for the story itself, and frankly, it didn’t really captivate me. It was also somewhat messily put together and was often boring. Honestly, I don’t know what to make of this film; it wasn’t really bad, but it wasn’t good either.

The film moved me deeply; moved me much less. The "too many notes" from the film Amadeus, so classic to me, applies very much here; in the poem there were so many grand words and ecstasy that it simply became soporific. In the story there were so many lines and ornaments that it became fragmented. There were many pearls in the gravel. And the film intrigued me; the role of the young Allen appealed to me greatly. The film is a success for me; but why I consider it a success, that is a mystery to me.

A film about a poet and his poem. Actually, the film deals with three themes simultaneously: the poem as a work of art, the poet explaining his poem, and the lawsuit filed by people who found the poem too shocking and provocative. And precisely those three matters mixed together are, for me, too much of a good thing. As a result, it all became too pretentious and too tiring. And mainly because of that, I lost interest. And I also wondered why a film actually had to be made about this. After all, time has caught up with the subject as well. At least in most (Western) cultures. I would have preferred the film to have made a choice. And if I had been allowed to choose, I would have preferred to see only the beautiful animation with music and text of the poem itself. I didn't need the rest. But that is also how I usually look at art. Good art needs no explanation or background. At least not for me.
