Ruth Matthews spends three years restoring an ancient Mayan temple when her husband dies there. She returns to North Carolina with her 6-year-old daughter Sally and her 12-year-old son Michael. Since then, her daughter has refused to speak a word. Ruth attributes this to her husband's death and sudden return to America. But when Sally's silence continues, and the girl turns out to have a miraculous gift, Ruth decides to enlist the help of Dr. Jacob Beerlander.
