Slightly better and more fun than Loves of a Blonde, but somehow I like Forman's Czechoslovakian films less than those of other directors from the period.

The Firemen's Ball has a nice set-up in any case. Especially the amateurish way in which they go about organizing and realizing the beauty pageant is quite funny to watch. The accusation against communism is incorporated in a nice way. The bigwigs organize everything here in a communist way, with the end result that almost everything goes wrong. In the former Eastern Bloc they were apparently not so happy about it at the time, because this film was banned in Czechoslovakia for a few years.

It certainly has its charm at times, is funny enough to entertain the entire running time, but lacks the real power of an anti-communist film in my opinion. Here and there it also looks a little dated, although it could also be that I simply didn't notice some of the references.

Nice,

As a comedy certainly successful but I could not immediately find a critique of the failing communist system. As if there were no more failing political systems after the fall of communism. Come on, just look at the failing Western political systems in Europe in 2015. You could make a nice comedy about that too. That is why I certainly do not find this film dated, unlike the films made in the late sixties in the "free" West, in which communism and Maoism were praised. I am talking about films by directors such as Godard and Bertolucci.

More about the film;

This film did contain a lot of funny scenes, like the one with the ladder in the beginning, the stolen food, the clumsy beauty pageant and of course the bungling of the firemen. I had to think of the films with Louis de Funes every now and then. It is striking that the girls were dressed so incredibly frumpy, just like in Loves of a Blond. Something that was indeed a characteristic of the communist system, where everyone had to look more or less the same.

Critical look at the "Uniform" that is not only incompetent and "puts reputation before honesty", but also offers no help to those in need and takes full advantage of it.

It is what lies behind this comedy that initially caused the film to be banned and prompted Forman's departure to the States.

Funny situations, lots of unforeseen situations and dialogues, in which a character is often excellently sketched with a small scene, make the film enjoyable.

Forman drew on the local population for many of the film's participants, and the film probably didn't take up much time to make.

It's a small film, but a convincing piece of cinematic work.
