Hong Meigui, Bai Meigui plot
Ironic portrait of an affair in Shanghai before the communist revolt. A wealthy, selfish businessman/playboy Tung (Chao) who has been educated in the West, his life is good (in his opinion). He prefers not to commit, but has mistresses and is the perfect getleman. When he moves in with a friend, he has a secret affair with his wife: the passionate Wong (Chen). To uphold his honor, he flees into a traditional marriage with a beautiful girl Meng (Yip). As long as he is in control, things are going well, but she becomes too masochistic and destroys herself. Based on Eileen Chang's (cult) novella.
