He Ni Zai Yi Qi plot

"Some lessons can only be learned by heart."

Xiaochun is a 13-year-old boy, a talented violinist who lives with his father in a small provincial town in China. Partly because of his shyness, making music is his way of expressing himself. His father wants the best for him, which is why they move to Beijing. There, Xiaochun can audition at a music school. Mediocre.

Classic Chinese film, with themes such as city vs countryside, young vs old and other beaten down themes. It is clearly from a previous generation of filmmakers, in a style that is now somewhat outdated. Maybe I should have watched this movie 20 years earlier, then it probably would have felt a little fresher.

Also found the acting quite variable. The father was quite nice, but I didn't like the son as much as Chen himself. In any case, there were few characters that I could really empathize with, which is a problem for a film like this. Story is not really special either, few surprises and Chen sticks to the beaten track.

It's not really bad, Chen is skilled enough as a director for that, but I don't think this is much more than a somewhat weak imitation of Yimou Zhang's late 90s films. Just expected a little more.

2.5*

It took me a while to get into it, then I really liked it and it held my attention. The story looked good. I was curious about the developments and I think Lili is an engaging character. Xiaochun also interested me and I think the violin playing is beautiful. Well played. It touched me. 4*

Mediocre. Such a story and theme that I feel I have seen many times before. And better too. Well acted, but I found that father especially annoying. It's all okay (visually, story, locations, individual moments) but never really great and the last half hour starts to drag, especially since the drama really gets the upper hand and the characters failed to convince me that hour and a half before. That last half hour didn't really interest me anymore. 2.0*.
