Hachi no Su no Kodomotachi plot

Japan, just after World War II. Ten orphans scurry from town to town as they try not to get caught by the police for vagrancy. They perform black market work led by a one-legged bum to support themselves. Then they come across a role model, in the form of an unnamed soldier who has just been repatriated, who is more inspiring and imaginative. Also an orphan himself and also without a destination, the soldier decides to take the children under his wing and go in search of a real home with them.
