This one was on TV and I gave it a try. I didn't really know what to expect, but I thought it was a good film and a fascinating story. Of course you know how it will end, but it didn't bother me.

The cast also did a great job and the movie looked good.

I thought it was worth a look.

Actually, the transfer of Dickens' novel to a few centuries later is somewhat disappointing.

Bittersweet about an unattainable love yet too much really bobbing about the same thing, the romance between beautiful Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke.

Film lacks power and conviction to really involve the viewer in the event and is therefore rather moderately successful.

Mmm.

Alfonso Cuarón doing a modern film adaptation of a book by Charles Dickens: it sounds promising. And it must be said that it does feel fresh enough at times, but the film has one big flaw and that is that Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow are not the right protagonists. Too mediocre acting, too little charisma and too little chemistry. Hawke is a bit too bumbling and Paltrow, while not an ugly appearance, lacks the sex appeal for rightfully rattling the man's cherries like that.

Other than that, the film looks pretty good. The supporting roles of Anne Bancroft and Robert De Niro are somewhat noncommittal, but well acted. The soundtrack, on the other hand, really appeals to me and still provides some emotion in the wooden relationship between Hawke's character and Paltrow's.

2.5
