In my humble opinion, Asghar Farhadi is one of the very best directors of the current era. His films – I have seen all nine – excel in design and story structure. In addition, the acting is done to perfection, but that applies to most films from Iran anyway.

Compared to the absolute toppers of Farhadi, such as Darbareye Elly (2009) and Jodaeiye Nader az Simin (2011), I find this film just a little less. The film threatens to become entangled in its own intrigue in the middle section, as the main character becomes entangled in a web of half or whole untruths.

That does not alter the fact that it remains a pleasure to watch. The possibility that Farhadi might be convicted of committing plagiarism does not detract from that as far as I am concerned.

From hero to zero...

Typical art house material, strongly executed but still dragging on too long and therefore loses power. Firstly, I have to admit that I thought the man himself, Rahim, was a wimp throughout the film. Not a great light, not made for success... as a good samaritan, he seems to find it difficult to find his footing in society. A good man, indeed... he would rather return the sack of gold he gets his hands on to its rightful owner than sell them himself to pay off his debts. His act makes him a hero, but when evidence is requested when he is looking for a job and the gossip starts circulating that he staged this himself, the its the wrong way...

Farhadi sketches a complex interacting tangle of family and moral codes within a controlling and suspicious society. The role of social media is also eagerly included. It's only the second film of his that I've seen, but he certainly doesn't tend to explain his story and characters simplistically.

About a man who suddenly becomes a hero from prison and actually unintentionally has to undergo the interests and praise of all those who, or what is all too happy to get attention from this, but finally goes full into it.

Unfortunately, through all kinds of perhaps well-intentioned but clumsy explanations, the loss of his status quickly set in.

Beautiful film, in which the observation of characters in changing circumstances is certainly a strong side of director Farhadi and an offer to be enjoyed by the viewer.

Is Ramin a leper or a naive? You have to decide for yourself, just like how far Farhadi subtly denounces habits, customs and conditions in his homeland.
