Evolution plot

The lives of three generations of a Jewish family, from the end of World War II in Budapest to modern-day Berlin. It is a past that cannot be easily processed, certainly not in a society that is still licking its wounds. The pain and stigma that Éva has to live with permeates the lives of her daughter Léna and grandson Jónás. The way they deal with their identity and memory can mean their downfall or their salvation. Their shared traumas are reflected in the present, but may offer them a hopeful future.

In Evolution, successive generations feel and bear the leaden weight of the Holocaust. More than seventy-five years later, many people from Western countries are left with only a serious culture of memory, which they are reminded of at least once a year. Not for descendants and therefore for 'heirs' of suffering. And every new generation experiences that suffering differently.

Impressive, haunting film. The first scene really grabs you by the throat. When the film goes to the next generations, the strong acting is especially striking. There was a lot of symbolism in the film where it escaped me at a few points why certain things happened. The red line in the film is how events in the past (The Holocaust) continue to influence and still determine life in later generations, similar to slavery. Nicely and carefully done!

A film in, if I'm not mistaken, three longtakes. There are three scenes, in three different time periods and also three different generations. The transitions are quite abrupt and Evolution therefore feels more like a collage of three short films. But when the end titles appear on the screen, it has served its purpose. Still, I'm not very impressed. Unlike my upstairs neighbor, I didn't think the acting was that good at all and the actions of the characters were not always believable. Especially the abrupt changes between arguments and reconciliation, but also the entire monologue of mother in which a lot of information is given to the viewer, it did not seem organic to me. The longtakes don't help with this either; the running camera forms a straitjacket for everything else. Mundruczó partly focuses on symbolism, with the water scene in the apartment and the lantern parade being particularly striking. The first seemed to me to refer to the gas chambers, the St. Martin procession seems more to portray the intolerance of cultural tradition. Well done in itself and the film also provides food for thought, but in terms of experience Evolution falls short. A perfunctory sit.
