Alberto Robles is a doctor who, under pressure from a priest friend, ends up in the health-plagued village of Santa Cruz. Strictly scientific Robles at first resists an emotional connection to the fate of the paupers, but at one point is moved by the willpower of a young girl Soledad. Robles decides to stay in Santa Cruz, but power-hungry landowner Roque Suazo also has his sights set on Soledad.
