Ein Kapitel für Sich plot

In Rostock, on May 1, 1945, white flags are hung on all houses in anticipation of the arrival of the Russian tanks. Peace comes not too soon for the Kempowski family. The absence of the father and the eldest son had made life hard during the war. A bottle of wine is uncorked, but soon the first shots are fired. The young Walter Kempowski (Schwartz) later leaves the Russian occupation zone and goes to devastated Hamburg, where he finds shelter with an uncle. However, he cannot find work because he does not have a residence permit for the British sector. He does get a job through a ruse.
