Atlanta, 1948. Old 72-year-old Miss Daisy has become a road hazard when she gets behind the wheel of her car. Her son Boolie, director of a flourishing factory, tries in vain to talk her into a driver. She would rather go on foot than give up her independence. But when she breaks down her brand-new Packard, she's had enough. Boolie pushes his plan anyway and engages the friendly and sunny Hoke. Hoke is a patient man with a strong sense of self. However, Daisy is not about to give up her independence. Still, Hoke manages to gain her trust and sympathy.

The bond between an old Southern lady and a black servant bridges racial prejudice.
Miss Daisy comes from a time when it was perfectly normal for whites to be served by blacks. A good example of this is Idella, who dies sad and lonely in Miss Daisy's small kitchen where she spent part of her life making food.
With Hoke things are different: his spontaneous and warm-hearted demeanor leads her to abandon her prejudices and see him as equal, albeit over a very long period when the "civil rights movement" started to change.
The bitter thing about the film is that Hoke is really just doing what he's supposed to do to survive. As they age they grow closer because they need each other, but I doubt that Hoke's bond to Daisy is so sentimental and affective underneath.
Jessica Tandy walked away with an Oscar for her role, and with a world record, because she is the oldest actress ever to take home the statue. Freeman is also enjoying his somewhat submissive role of servant. Not bad at all, but I liked Green Book better.

Sympathetic film that shows that Freeman really remains a nice guy. But unfortunately it remains at a certain height.
Miss Daisy is a somewhat suspicious moth-eaten old woman who was born rich, but doesn't want to show off.
She lives in a big house, which is being dusted by a colored man. Her son visits regularly and everything is done for her. Until one day it turns out that she is no longer allowed to drive a car herself and that she has to walk long distances to do her ritual shopping.
Then Hoke comes on the scene. The man who offers her help. Although that is difficult to receive by Daisy's character. But after some altercations, Woke still becomes her regular driver and the two build a strong bond with each other.
All very nicely made up, but unfortunately Driving Miss Daisy manages to babbling on a bit too much. When the film finally started to look a bit like a road movie, it drew my attention to… but unfortunately it remains limited. Because of this, the film doesn't really get to me and it really failed its attempts.
And that is a sin. The acting is good and the entire life course up to the eventual dementia of Miss Daisy is highly regarded. It just wished it had a little more spice. Perhaps by extending the playing time, because two decades in an hour and a half is not convincing either.
