“You’re not gonna like the way this story ends. But I think you’re gonna like this story,” says teenager Wally Park [Mia Isaac] in the misleading voice-over at the opening of this sentimental drama, in which her father [John Cho] discovers that his persistent headaches are a symptom of a life-threatening condition. His doctor [Elizabeth Hawthorne] makes it clear that there is a significant chance he will die on the operating table or suffer permanent brain damage from surgery. If he does not get treated, he has at most a year to live. Instead of discussing this immediately with his daughter, he more or less forces her to go on a road trip with him to a school reunion. This standard tearjerker is bearable thanks to the lively Isaac, one of the rare examples of a teenager who convincingly plays a teenager. And indeed, the ending is nothing to write home about.

A decent road movie—with fine performances by John Cho and Mia Isaac—about the strained relationship between a divorced father and his teenage daughter, until a shocking event, like a bolt from the blue, throws the whole story in the trash. Surprising on the one hand, but the death blow for the film on the other. A shame.

I’d had this movie lying around for a while, but never got around to starting it. The cover, the trailer, I don't know... it just appealed to me so much. I finally put it on this evening. And honestly: I thought this was a fine road movie. It does take a little time to really get going, though. In case you aren't entirely convinced at the beginning: the film gets better and better. For Cho, things seem to need a bit of 'warming up'.
Isaac acts brilliantly (what conviction she puts into her role!), Cho does a decent job. Otherwise, it is a reasonably standard but solidly made road movie. And on the positive side: I found the realism above average. The film never goes off the rails (which happens quite often with many road movies, especially when they try to be funny). Although the film tackles some pretty heavy subjects, it remains pleasantly lighthearted (but is certainly not a comedy). The film ultimately managed to keep me engaged for the entire running time and could actually have been a bit longer (and that is primarily to the credit of Mia Isaac). On the critical side: I think the film would have been even more interesting if the father had shared earlier that he is dying. I understand – given the message at the end – why they didn't choose to do that, but still...
There is quite a bit of criticism regarding the ending. I actually thought the sudden ending was fine and certainly didn't detract from the film. For me, 3.5 - 4 stars. But I must admit that I have a soft spot for road movies, so perhaps I should deduct half a star for the sake of fairness.
