Der Schimmelreiter plot

In the Frisian village of Koogs, the dike warden dies of a heart attack. A horse competition is held to decide who will be the new dike warden. The winner is Hauke Haien, a servant of the previous dike warden and the lover of his daughter. His first project as a new dike warden is to build a new, larger dike. The other inhabitants of the village do not like this at all.
