De Stilte rond Christine M. plot

Three women have brutally murdered a man. They had never met before and then this act. Upon arrest, they immediately confess their guilt. A female psychiatrist is assigned to the case to investigate whether the women are mentally ill. Have the women acted in their right mind or in a state of total bewilderment? They themselves are quite laconic about it.

Interesting image of the era, but otherwise a reprehensible film. Technically terrible, by the way. Really such a terribly dated film from the period when Dutch films had to be politically responsible. Or far left or feminist. Can also be seen in the cast, with people like Frijda and Habbema (who then more often camped in her beloved GDR than in the Netherlands). Fortunately, Gorris has now converted and calls her approach of the time 'naive'. 1.5*

Three women kill a man in a clothing boutique. A psychiatrist tries to find out in a documentary-like way why the women did this. And therein lies the great shortcoming of the film. It is a feature film and not a documentary. In this way it all remains very distant and as a viewer you feel little involved with the women. It might as well be a play. Or a book being read. It is also at the expense of the underlying, certainly at that time still very sensitive, ideas of feminism and the fact that women want to break free from the men's world. Only in the last very striking court scene do you finally watch a feature film. That scene is the strongest part of the whole movie. And that is a pity because the film certainly had something in it.
