He spends the remaining time on his hobby, designing and making furniture. When Patrick loses his favorite hammer one day, he embarks on a quest that takes him to the farthest reaches of the campsite. When Patrick's father dies suddenly, Patrick's journey becomes an existential quest.

Very nice.

The great boom of Belgian talent has been behind us for a while, but the mid-00s have brought about a turning point. This makes it a bit easier for directors with a more unique vision to do their thing in Belgium. This De Patrick is a perfect example of that.

This is definitely not an audience film. It's too weird, too familiar for that. The film also lacks a clear plot (except that Patrick has lost his hammer, but as the main plot point that is quite absurd). Also visually (a camera that does not always follow the characters) and in terms of soundtrack it is a striking event. The result is that for a long time you don't really know where it's going and what you're watching for a long time.

It is a film that fits in the line of Ex Drummer, Man Bites Dog, Calvaire .... Not so much in terms of genre, but in terms of typical Belgian, black/alienating comedy. A film for the enthusiast, one to cherish. Hopefully Mielants will continue in the film world.

4.0* and a extended review

Wonderful and beautiful film about grieving around a somewhat remarkable man who, in the words of someone else, 'doesn't try to be someone but is just himself'. The film does not reveal whether and if so what is wrong with this Patrick – is he retarded or autistic? – but his character turns out to be perfect to depict incisively the interpersonal relations at the naturist campsite, which campsite comes into the hands of Patrick after the death of his father. The film immediately stands out because of the nudist decor – in which the nudist camp is also functional because it forms a small, isolated society and is so ideal for the anthropological study of this film – and does not get bored for a second because of all the fascinating interactions and developments. I would have added another half star if the plot didn't have some unsatisfactory ends here and there: the plot isn't fully boarded up, let's say, even though I fully realize that the hammer is gone and Patrick can't be blamed. ?

Pleasant slightly absurdist work from Belgian soil. Nice off-beat and a funny meandering story. However, in terms of both absurdism and black comedy, it is a bit too light to really overwhelm. Eventually the atmosphere started to feel a bit monotonous and repetitive, but luckily the film doesn't last too long. A few wonderful roles will continue, with Bokma and Clement as outliers.
