In the 1950s, sixteen-year-old Joanna moved in with her haughty Aunt Martha in a tenement house in New York City. But a biological threat from the Soviet Union forces the building and tenants into isolation. As food runs out and Aunt Martha's contentious leadership role expands, Joanna realizes she must face both her "dark" feeling and her aunt to save the tenants.
