If you start the movie with the fantastic Inner City Blues you already have me.

However, I also lost interest halfway through the film.

What many people here don't realize is that Spike often makes his films with black American youth in mind that don't even know how they were exploited and disadvantaged in the Vietnam war and then forgotten. He then has to sacrifice himself again to make a film about it because nobody else does it.

But the story just wasn't very well developed. It actually flew in all directions and the typical Spike cinematic features were quite sparse.

Too bad about the great Delroy Lindo and no less than 2 heroes from The Wire in the main cast.

All in all reasonable and that is just not enough for Spike Lee.

In almost all American war films, the role of black American soldiers is grossly underexposed. Perhaps by the way, Spike Lee will come up with a film about four black veterans, who return to Vietnam to search for the remains of a former comrade and in the process find a gold treasure.

The result is a variegated, often violent action drama, framed by inky pages from the recent history of America. The Black Lives Matter movement is currently slowly winning the battle for public opinion in America. I doubt Spike Lee's film makes a positive contribution to this in the absence of social engagement.

Spike Lee wants to send a message with this film. A message that is necessary and especially that part of the film is at the same time interesting but also visually not always beautifully done. Although it was not bad to make those sidesteps to photos and images of existing figures and events. It's more interesting than beautiful that way. Attention is also paid to the clichés surrounding the Vietnam War, which is referred to here as the American War and not the Vietnam War. The part of African Americans in the war, the representation of the war in Hollywood and the war that was being fought in America in the meantime. Apart from the film itself, this is certainly interesting to watch.

It does feel a bit weird though. The message was central and the creativity to film it is in second place. In addition, there is still a much too long 2nd story around that treasure, which takes the momentum out of the film but also deviates so much from the message that Lee wanted to tell. And without a message, this is certainly not the director's best film. A somewhat shorter film and no Delroy Lindo would have done the film better. A film full of good ideas and intentions.
