Based on a well-known autobiography, this film tells of anxiety among lower-middle-class teenagers of the suburbs of Rio, experienced by 15-year-old Elaine G. In Baixada Fluminense, a proletarian and large area, in the province of Rio de Janeiro, lives 15-year-old Elaine with her neurotic and frustrated mother Eunice and her ailing father Milton, a retired army sergeant. But there is no good rapport at all at home. When Elaine meets Otàvio, a divorced man eighteen years his senior, they fall in love. Her family drives Eliane into such an impossible condition that she runs away from home to another city.
