Stories from the favela

After the success of Cidade de Deus, they made a series City Of Men in Brazil, of which this is the film version. I certainly didn't think it was a bad film, with more attention to daily life in the slums of Rio. Not just a crime film, but also a story about friendships, family relationships, the search for a father figure, taking on responsibilities. I especially liked the underlying story of the two fathers of Wallace and Ace, and especially when the two friends leave the favela together is not cliché. It may end well. . The plague of gang violence is also there, but not in the same way as in Cidade de Deus, where it took on a central role.

Worthy ''successor'' to Cidade de deus.

It has now become clear to me that this kind of Brazilian crime films suit me a lot more than, for example, the American gangster films. A bit less forced cool, and above all comes across a lot more natural.

Furthermore, this film is actually fine in all respects, only just slightly less than Cidade de Deus. Cinematography again top-notch, soundtrack adequate, and the acting more than decent. It lacks a bit of real outliers, such as Cidade de Deus had, but otherwise not much to criticize. Incidentally, after a number of Brazilian films, I noticed what a wonderful language Portuguese actually is. Sounds clunky, but also beautiful at the same time, or something.

Beautiful and very entertaining road movie all in all. 3.5*.
