Columbus' idea of traveling to India could be realized if only because the Spanish treasury was empty and the reigning Queen Isabella was flattered by the charming, fortune-seeking son of a poor weaver. Intent on being the ruler of new land, and at the same time cleaning up the ailing situation, Isabella thought it natural to order the sailor Columbus to set sail for the Spanish crown.
