Quite disappointing. I thought the beginning was ok, but it actually sputters the whole movie. Certainly the attention to the drug thing becomes very repetitive after a while. Somewhere logical because that's how it goes in real life, but it all took me a bit too long. Tom Holland does not act well, but the film actually has too little to offer. Too much repetition and then a film of 2h20 is really too long. I have never seen his girlfriend Ciara Bravo play before, she was not so good at the more difficult acting moments. I watched the movie and I don't recommend it at all. Hopefully it might help some people with this problem. I don't know, I'm not into drugs at all and these kinds of movies rarely get above the average for me. The post-traumatic stress syndrome and the military part fascinated the most, but it is certainly not a great film as Man Down (2015)

The film is a repository of themes: romance, war traumas, addiction and crime (a bit with a wink). Each of those items deserves its own story, but the stacking ultimately only leads to an exaggerated playing time, in which little of the topics touched on balance sticks.

The film has its moments here and there, but I can't help feeling that the Russo brothers have overplayed their hand.

It's 2007 when a young junkie nicknamed Cherry [Tom Holland] commits a bank robbery. And not for the first time. In five episodes we discover how the shy student of 2002 degenerated into a drug-addicted serial robber. A key role is played by his great love Emily [Ciara Bravo], as well as his experiences in the US Army Medical Corps. The story includes elements from Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and The Best Years Of Our Lives, but the screenplay by Angela Russo-Otstot and Jessica Goldberg (based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Nico Walker, one of the executive producers) takes a quirky approach with a daring but successful mix of tragedy, irony and humour. Rightly praised for Geoffrey Haley's fantastic camera work and sound editing, the Russos make sure that style never compromises substance. Tom Holland is breathtakingly good in an extremely complex role.
