Barry Gordon, the eldest son of a Virginia colonel, inherits a penchant for alcohol, the habit that caused his father's death. His brother, Tom, falls in love with Muriel Beekman, the daughter of their guardian. Barry loves her back, but feels rejected. Three years later, after long travels, Barry learns that Tom, whom Mr. Beekman had sent to Morocco, has been captured by desert raiders and is being held for ransom. He begins a search for him and meets the Beekmans and Kitty Van Ness in Tangier. Barry and Muriel discover their love for each other, but he refuses to commit himself while Tom is still alive.
