A lockkeeper's daughter is married against her will to an ugly and repulsive Marquis; on the wedding night she is unfaithful to him with a comedian, but he is killed. She is condemned for the rest of her life to the monster, which she was forced to marry. The second part is set in 1839. Juliette, a seamstress, wants to marry Count Hubert, but his powerful uncle, the Archbishop, decides in favor of his niece. Juliette succumbs to grief as the wedding is consummated. In the last part, set in 1939, the castle belongs to a wealthy banker who wants to find a suitable husband for his daughter. She isn't thrilled about it until she meets the young man: it's love at first sight, so all's well that ends well.
