Rio de Janeiro, the eighties. Maria Cecilia (Lucélia Santos) is the virgin daughter of the rich and powerful Dr. Werneck (Carlos Kroeber). When she has car trouble, she is raped by five men. Her family decides she should get married and has someone pick out who works for the family. The choice falls on Edgard (José Wilker), a somewhat simple and single man. He is promised a large sum of money if he marries Mary.
