The widower Squire Weldon gives his daughter Anne the colt Black Beauty in the hope that handling the horse will also teach Anne self-discipline. Anne meets young Bill Dixon who is leaving for England for two years and she is very interested in him, especially when he says he hopes to find a beautiful young foal on his return. After two years Bill does indeed return, but Anne notices that she is still seen as a child.
