Bastard Out of Carolina plot
In post-World War II South Carolina, a young woman named Anney gives birth to an illegitimate daughter nicknamed Bone. A few years later, Anney marries apparently civilized Glen, who, however, does not get along with Bone. A boy's miscarriage with Anney infuriates her husband and he begins to regularly abuse Bone behind her back. When Anney finds out what her husband has done, she leaves him. However, her need for a man's love eventually drives her back to Glen, setting the stage for a horrific accident between Glen and his stepdaughter. As a result, a rift forms between mother and daughter that may never be healed.
