Bab El-Oued City plot
Algiers, 1988, not long after the bloody October uprisings. The young Boualem is in love with Yamina, the sister of the fundamentalist Said. She is terrorized by Said. Boualem has to catch up on sleep during the day, because at night he works in a bakery. But as he sleeps, the message of Said's Islamic fundamentalist movement blasts from fifteen loudspeakers through the working-class neighborhood of Bab el-Oued. One day, Boualem can no longer bear the noise and he goes berserk. He rips one of the loudspeakers off a roof and throws it into the sea. This is discovered by one of Said's religious henchmen.
