Oof. I expected something different from such a film that has received the necessary fame thanks to the Oscar nominations. The beginning is unnecessarily long-winded and slow. Gradually the drama gets a bit more content, but it remains nothing more than almost 2 hours of watching a family arguing, and you have to feel like it. This family is not really realistic either, with all the secrets that the family members carry with them and suddenly all come out.

I thought the acting of the two nominated ladies was quite average, Roberts does not play in a comedy here for a change, but I did not find what she shows here very impressive, her (supporting) role did not really offer much room to show something . Strange that this role was worth a nomination, maybe it was just her turn on the list of the academy... Also for (among others) the Golden Globes were both nominated. And Streep neatly plays a caricatural role, nothing else. I already knew that actors can play caricatures and I don't think it's really special. Rightly so, by the way, that both ladies did not win (they also did not win at the Golden Globes or the other awards for which they were nominated).

At times the film manages to reach an above-average level, but that happens far too little for my taste. Thin.

This is a movie about a heavily (overt as opposed to a covert otw sneaky) psychopathic mother who has been terrorizing the whole family for years. The father did not commit suicide for nothing and the children are quite traumatized. Nowadays people talk about Narcissism instead of Psychopathy. If you've had a parent like that, you'll recognize it right away.

It argues for most commenters that they don't recognize it and have had a happier childhood.

What you sow is what you reap. As I get older I notice that this saying becomes more and more meaningful to me. Both positive and negative. That's probably why the theme in this film really appealed to me. Despite the fact that there is mainly arguing in the film. But the film with its underlying hidden stories and carefully constructed characters builds up very nicely and subtly. And it is also very well acted.
