Atambua 39° Celsius plot

Displacement gnaws at the souls of East Timorese refugees in the dusty border town of Atambua. Bus driver Ronaldo fled when violence broke out over independence after the 1999 referendum. He left behind his wife and two daughters, taking his son João with him. He swears bitterly that he will not return until his hometown is Indonesian again. João is now a teenager who avoids his father, hangs out with friends and takes comfort in cassette tapes with his mother's voice. Aside from Ronaldo's drunken resignation, little else happens in this stalled existence until João sets his sights on Nikia, a girl he hasn't seen in a long time and who harbors a painful secret.
