Aldo Piscitello, a clerk in the Italian government, is forced to join Italy's fascist party in 1934. When the Second World War breaks out, his son Giovanni has to join the fight, but Aldo does not want this at all. However, he does not dare to act against Mussolini for fear of reprisals. As the war draws to a close, Aldo finally finds the courage to stand up to the fascist regime.
