Ach, Du Fröhliche plot
Walter Lörke is the labor director of a state company that just before Christmas 1961 announces the marriage of his daughter to Thomas, his future son-in-law. This Thomas does not like the GDR very much: the narrow-mindedness, the opportunism and the 'comradeship' in the youth party and among the state officials. Lörke, who relies rather on the party documents and doesn't really expect much more from life himself, is initially dismayed by this, but then starts looking for people who are able to give him information about why Thomas actually thinks this way. He discovers a contradictory world...
