Somewhat disappointing. In the genre among the better basketball films, Above the Rim certainly does not stand out, because it cannot distinguish itself. The story is technically not very good and the acting is even mediocre, Tupac plays far from well and Marlon Wayans plays his standard type and is therefore annoyingly present. The basketball scenes are entertaining, just like the confrontation with Bernie Mac, but Above the Rim cannot deliver more than this.

A nice basketball movie with Duane Martin and Tupac Shakur. Wood Harris made his acting debut with this film. Around this time, Shakur was linked to a shooting in New York, and was replaced by a lookalike during the basketball scene. During the intro he reads the text "Pain...I couldn't help but notice your pain. My pain? It runs deep, share it with me!". This voice-over is from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Filming took place in July 1993. The film is set in New York, but the soundtrack was provided by the West Coast-based label "Death Row Records." Marlon Wayans uses his comedic skills, but on the other hand shows that he can also handle more serious roles. He previously appeared with Bernie Mac in Mo' Money. Tonya Pinkins plays Kyle's mother. A striking detail is that she is only three years older than Duane Martin.

A successful film, partly thanks to the cast. Also for people who have little interest in basketball.

3.0 *
