Adam Johnson is a self-destructive jazz musician. He maintains rather tumultuous relationships with the people in his life. Adam is actually a very talented trumpet player, but he is plagued by ill health, alcoholism and a short temper. He is also consumed by an all-encompassing feeling of guilt.

Adam is a talented jazz cornetist from New York who ends up in a negative spiral. He gets into trouble with alcohol, fights, managers, lovers and racism. When he starts a relationship with the granddaughter of an older trumpet player, the question is whether she pulls him up or he pulls her down.
Sammy Davis Jr. plays one of his more serious roles here. He is recognizable by his jutting chin and the brilliantine in his hair. He sings himself, but his cornet is dubbed by Nat Adderley.
Cicely Tyson plays the committed woman who takes care of this tormented soul. Louis Armstrong plays her grandfather, and gives a great interpretation. Mel Tormé sings All That Jazz in interaction with the audience. Frank Sinatra's son plays a young trumpet player. Johnny Brown has a beautiful role as the blind pianist. Catchy jazz goes hand in hand with psychological depth and social themes.
