Jim Caldwell is the new commander at an Air Force base in California. He is a hard, driven leader who values discipline and perfection. This alienates him from his colleagues, especially after he fires the "squad commander" for alcoholism. Due to his busy work he neglects his wife and the latter starts a loneliness relationship with his best friend Hollis Farr, the deputy commander of the base. Jim is having more and more trouble with Farr's more sociable behavior, who according to him has less and less eye for efficiency. He therefore asks to transfer Farr. Then an emergency arises and Farr must prove himself.
