Okay, granted. Perhaps the story is sometimes a bit too long, and perhaps an end can be put behind the story a bit earlier. If our captain in desperation, there maybe. The philosophical reflections in our own language are not very helpful either. A bit of quasi-profound drivel is always nicer in a foreign language. French, rather German or why not Hungarian for the occasion?

Léa Seydoux plays, is the classic femme fatale, beautiful. Or is she not now?

Look, just because you don't know that after 3 hours, this is a beautiful film.

Captain Jakob Störr [Gijs Naber], a sea captain from the Arnhem area, proclaims during a meeting with swindler Kodor [Sergio Rubini] that he can persuade the first woman who walks in to marry him. He puts his money where his mouth is and enters into a marriage of convenience with Lizzy [Léa Seydoux]. However, the blood is thicker than water and in the years that follow Jacob learns some wise, sometimes hard lessons about love. It's a good thing the story is divided into chapters starting with the lesson in question, otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue what it was about at all. A fire on a cruise ship provides the only interesting moment in this painfully slow, boring and ridiculously long (169 minutes) romantic drama about two uninteresting, unpleasant characters. Enyedi tries out a few things and at least manages to make one of the most tasteless sex scenes ever. Bravo!

Thought I'd give it a try, despite the negative posts here. I sat on the couch with clammy hands: this is exciting!. Original story of course, with a touch of mystery and beautiful cinematography. To lick your fingers. The recordings were made in Malta, Budapest and Hamburg. Especially the shots in Hamburg are beautiful. But of course you don't just watch this movie for that. Was impressed by the roles of Gijs Naber as the somewhat stiff sea captain and the seductive and mysterious Léa Seydoux, of which we as viewers, but also the main character, cannot find out exactly what role she plays. I found it exciting to the end.

In fact also quite a Dutch film, due to the presence of Naber, and various reflections and dialogues in Dutch. Funny, but agree with jorrit3 that these would have sounded better in German or Hungarian. But it is a Dutch sailor, with a touch of 'Flying Dutchman', who tries to keep a grip on events. I thought the division into seven chapters, which are about your attitude towards life, was well chosen. Even thought for a moment of Slauerhoff, also a sailor. The lock is strong. No lame explanations of anything. As a viewer you can finish the story yourself.
