A Family Upside Down plot

Old Ted Long (Fred Astaire) has always been very proud of his independence and resilience. When he has a heart attack, his wife Emma (Helen Hayes) can no longer take care of him alone. This forces them to move in with their son Mike (Efren Zimbalist Jr.) and his wife Carol (Pat Crowley). However, Ted's heart problems continue, and the family faces the difficult choice of keeping him in the house or placing him in a retirement home.
