A bad movie about the Studio 54 nightclub that was located on West 54th Street in Manhattan in New York.

The story is largely about owner Steve Rubell and bartender Shane O'Shea.

Anyone who knows the history of this studio also knows how it all ended.

It was the 1st movie for Mike Myers in which he plays a serious role.

The story is set in the late 1970s, but some scenes use a 1990 Chevy police car.

Unfortunately not really exciting.

“A guy named Steve Rubell had a dream: To throw the best damned party the world had ever seen and to make it last forever. He built a world where fantasy was put up as reality and where an 80-year-old disco queen could dance till dawn. Where models mingled with mechanics, plumbers danced with princess. It was a place where all labels were left behind. A place where there were no rules.”

Friendly. The 70s atmosphere is well portrayed, and Studio 54 as a major attraction comes to the fore. The acting is mediocre, but actors like Phillippe, Campbell, Myers and Hayek do fit into their roles. And good casting is also important. Especially the beginning is nice with the atmosphere of sex, drugs and the rock 'n' roll mentality. When the drama comes into play, it all collapses like a plum pudding, especially because the characters don't interest you very much. Studio 54 as disco walhalla remains the most interesting, and that is both the strength and the weakness of the film.

Well-known title, nice cast and meeting the film at the thrift store. Well, that's all you need, so I just checked yesterday. Not that I expected much from this, because to be honest I didn't quite know what to expect, but the film was a bit disappointing.

1970s, Studio 54 the place to be in New York and the surrounding area, an eccentric owner and the young Shane on the run from his family, origin and vision of the future. They are the starting ingredients of this film. And at first, the film seems to do a lot of good. Phillipe is fine, Myers for once not that silly humor but a seriously eccentric character, the music and a bevy of beautiful women with Stringfield, Ward and Hayek. Not to mention that despite the subject of nightlife, which I don't like, the film still has a pleasant vibe. Amid the profusion of outrageous behavior, Shane is climbing up the hierarchy of Studio 54. Not bad in that regard...

But, where does the film actually want to go? The characters are also insufficiently explained to create real depth and the film seems to get stuck in a fairly superficial time recording of Shane and his time within Studio 54. Whether it should revolve around the double image that is created between all wealth within reach, but also always the dissatisfaction with what is not attainable. Despite all the drugs, sex and rock and roll, there is still a gray edge of emptiness, jealousy and drama that is gaining ground and making the sweet taste less and less delicious.

Studio 54 is nice for once, but that quickly strands the ship.
