Gérard is a former crime reporter, divorced three times, a member of the AA and off alcohol for six months and two days. He has moved to an apartment on Rue Darling in Hochelaga, the working-class neighborhood in Montreal where he grew up. One evening the flat explodes and six people are killed. Gérard escapes death by accident, a lace that was loose. He just doesn't know if he should be so happy about it. Why did a small child die and not him? Why did it happen? Gérard's journalistic instincts resurface and without knowing exactly what he is looking for, he begins to rummage through the past of the victims.
