203 Kochi plot
Depiction of the bloody siege of Fort Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905. The story is dominated by Lieutenant Takeshi Kogyo, teachers and a reserve officer who becomes commander of the platoon and later of the company. At the same time, the film follows army commander General Nogi, who conquers the fortress on behalf of Emperor Matsuhito.

Director Masuda traditionally takes his time to depict the war between Russia and Japan. Russian expansion into the Far East led to a conflict with Japan for sphere of influence in 1904. Despite the legal presence (lease agreement with China) of the Russians, the aggression of the Japanese Empire was not condemned and even welcomed by the Western powers. The Russo-Japanese War was important in many ways. The outcome sparked domestic discontent and revolution in Tsarist Russia and the rise of Japan as a great power. Furthermore, it was the last modern war in which beautiful uniforms were still worn by the soldiers.
The battle scene in the film focuses on the siege of the strategic Hill 203. We see incessant bayonet charges from the Japanese infantry that are repeatedly mowed down by Russian machine gun fire. However, the intransigence of General Nogi portrayed by Nakadai is untiring. Together with the somewhat irascible general Kodama played by Tanba, victory is ultimately won and the stoic Nogi will break emotionally, albeit subdued. Mifune, who only plays a supporting role as the Japanese emperor, may console him.
